This boutique collection of luxury houseboats reimagines accommodations for modern celebrations, inviting guests to slow down, reconnect, and fully immerse themselves in the magic of Wilmington’s waterfront charm.

More than simply a place to stay, The Cove has become a destination in itself for couples, families, and wedding parties gathering in the city. With private patios overlooking the water, beautifully designed villas, and inviting shared spaces along the dock, every stay is crafted to feel intentional and memorable. From sunset welcome drinks to peaceful mornings on the river, The Cove blends the intimacy of a boutique retreat with the energy of a wedding weekend celebration. We spoke with General Manager Marcia Bittner about the vision behind The Cove, hosting unforgettable wedding stays, and what makes this one-of-a-kind waterfront property such a special part of Wilmington’s wedding scene.
Share the story behind The Cove and what makes it a special place for visiting wedding guests?
The Cove Riverwalk Villas is a boutique collection of luxury houseboats located on the Cape Fear River in downtown Wilmington. The project began in 2021, with our official "grand opening" in early 2024, and the vision of creating something that feels completely different from a traditional hotel or vacation rental. What makes The Cove special, especially for wedding guests, is that it turns accommodations into part of the celebration itself. Instead of simply having a place to stay, guests are immersed in a peaceful, on-the-water setting that feels elevated, memorable, and still incredibly convenient to downtown venues.
How do you typically host wedding parties, families, or guests who stay with you during celebrations in Wilmington?
We regularly host groups attending weddings throughout downtown Wilmington, and we focus on making the experience feel seamless and intentional from the start. Guests are welcomed, assisted from the parking garage down to the dock, and guided into a setting that immediately feels like a retreat. From there, the weekend can take shape in a really natural way. Groups often gather on the dock between events, share meals, or relax on their private patios overlooking the water. Our end-of-dock space can also be reserved for a welcome gathering or a morning-after brunch, providing couples with a beautiful, casual place to bring everyone together outside the formal wedding events. We also offer enhancements such as charcuterie boards, celebration setups, and curated local experiences that can further elevate the stay.
What kind of experience do you aim to create for couples and their loved ones during their stay?
Our goal is to create an environment where people can slow down and truly connect. Weddings tend to be fast-paced and structured, so we aim to offer a space that feels calm, beautiful, and restorative in between those moments. We want guests to feel taken care of without it ever feeling overdone. It’s a balance of thoughtful service and the freedom to enjoy the space in your own way.
What sets The Cove apart from other accommodation options in the Wilmington area?
The setting is the most obvious difference. Each villa sits directly on the water, with private outdoor space and views that you simply don’t get anywhere else. Beyond that, we offer a range of layouts including one-, two-, and three-bedroom villas. This gives wedding guests a lot of flexibility, whether they’re traveling as a couple, a group of friends, or a family who wants to stay together. We also operate more like a boutique hotel than a standard short-term rental, with an on-site crew, consistent standards, and a strong focus on the overall guest experience.
Can you describe the ideal wedding weekend stay at The Cove from check-in to check-out?
An ideal stay starts with a smooth, welcoming arrival. Guests are greeted, helped down to the dock, and step into a space where the water, the light, and the quiet immediately set the tone. Mornings might look like coffee on a private patio with the river right in front of you. Midday could be getting ready for a wedding with natural light pouring in, or gathering with friends across a few nearby villas. Between events, guests have a place to return to that feels peaceful and grounded. Couples might host a welcome drink at the end of the dock as the sun sets, or bring everyone together the next morning for a relaxed, post-wedding gathering. The dock itself also becomes a beautiful backdrop for photos throughout the weekend. By the time guests check out, the goal is that their stay at The Cove feels like a meaningful and memorable part of the wedding weekend, not just where they slept.
