ROOTED IN CREATIVITY, BUILT FOR COMMUNITY

Before Crafted Outpost became one of the Cargo District's most beloved destinations for handmade goods, it began with something far more personal: a desire to build a creative, connected life rooted in community. Founder Rachael Kinsey has woven together her backgrounds in design, art, yoga, and entrepreneurship to create more than a retail space—she has built a gathering place where local makers, meaningful craftsmanship, and human connection take center stage. Today, Crafted Outpost showcases the work of more than 70 local and regional artisans, while celebrating the stories, creativity, and passion behind every handcrafted piece. We sat down with Kinsey to talk about the inspiration behind Crafted Outpost, the evolution of the Cargo District, and why supporting handmade has never been more meaningful.

Rachael Kinsey, The Crafted Outpost

The Crafted Outpost brings together an incredible collection of handmade goods from local and regional makers. What inspired you to create this space, and what was your vision from the beginning?

After years working on the creative team at Nordstrom and as an interior designer for Room & Board in San Francisco, I moved to Wilmington to raise my son closer to nature and family. Motherhood transformed my understanding of success. I wanted to build a life where creativity wasn't just my career—it was woven into our everyday lives and shared with the people around us. Yoga became an anchor during a season of rebuilding my life. Through Yoga Village, I began implementing yoga programs in local public schools. Watching children play and create so freely reminded me how naturally creativity lives within us. It also revealed something unexpected: adults were longing for permission to play again.

That realization inspired me to create Craft Camp, where I combined yoga, creativity, and nature-based art. Whether we were naturally dyeing textiles with flowers, weaving seasonal wreaths, or creating our annual lunar calendar, the goal was never simply to make art. It was to awaken curiosity, reconnect with ourselves, one another, and the natural world, and remember that creativity is a way of moving through life. Crafted Outpost grew from that same philosophy. I wanted to create a permanent home where local makers could grow alongside one another, beautifully made objects carried stories, and people gathered around creativity, nature, and craftsmanship.

Today, my vision has grown beyond the shop into creating seasonal rituals, ceremonies, and Rites of Passage. My hope is to create sacred spaces where women can honor and support one another as they cross the thresholds of womanhood, and where people can gather to reconnect with nature's rhythms, celebrate life's transitions, and remember that we were never meant to move through them alone. This year, I'm feeling called to go even deeper into that intention. I'm especially excited to collaborate with facilitators, artists, and friends in our community who share this philosophy, bringing our unique gifts together to create rituals and gatherings that honor the seasons of the earth and the seasons of our lives.

How do you curate the artisans and products you feature at Crafted Outpost? What makes a maker or product a good fit?

Curating Crafted Outpost is about people first. Every maker we carry is someone I've met, built a relationship with, and genuinely believe in. Their craftsmanship certainly matters, but so do their values, their story, and the intention behind what they create. You'll find everything from original artwork and handcrafted jewelry to ceramics, herbal apothecary products, naturally dyed textiles, ethically sourced crystals, and home goods. Many of our makers use sustainable practices, repurposed materials, or ingredients gathered from nature, which beautifully reflects the values of our shop. Every artisan’s pieces carry a story to tell and becomes more meaningful. 

Are there any customer favorites or hidden gems visitors shouldn't miss? One of my favorites is introducing people to artists never discovered otherwise. There's an incredible collection of original artwork and prints. I enjoy helping customers bring their unique home spaces to life. 

My jewelry, Rachael Kinsey Designs, is also very close to my heart. I've been designing jewelry since a child and consider it my “ happy place” when creating.  From earrings, necklaces, backless, and my newest bolos (a must have), pieces are also customizable. Whether it's a gift to mark a milestone, honor a loved one, celebrate a new chapter, or simply a daily reminder of an intention they want to carry with them, every piece becomes a wearable reminder of what matters most to them.  A natural segway from my jewelry is our crystal collection, thoughtfully chosen and hand-picked. There's something special about finding the crystal that resonates with each person. The hidden gem, though, is the stories. Because we personally know every maker, we can share the people, the process, and the passion behind each piece. That connection is something you can't replicate with mass-produced goods.

The Cargo District has become one of Wilmington's most creative destinations. How has being part of that community influenced Crafted Outpost?

Watching the Cargo District evolve over the past five and a half years has been one of the greatest joys of owning Crafted Outpost. When I first opened, there were only a handful of businesses. It's been exciting to watch the neighborhood grow into one of Wilmington's most creative destinations alongside so many other locally owned businesses. Having a background in design, I've believed thoughtfully designed spaces influence the way people gather and connect. The Cargo District has allowed many local entrepreneurs to take a chance on a dream. Many of us were opening our first brick-and-mortar business, and now dreams have grown into thriving successes. 

Opening Crafted Outpost during the Cargo District's early years inspired me to help bring people into the neighborhood through hosting the Crafted Markets. Today, I'm proud to serve on the Cargo District Events Board, helping organize seasonal festivals and community events. 

I believe small businesses don't thrive in isolation. The more reasons we give people to explore the neighborhood, the more all of us benefit. To me, the Cargo District is more than a collection of businesses—it's a place where people can spend an afternoon wandering, discovering something unexpected around every corner, and supporting the incredible small businesses that make Wilmington unique.

What do you hope first-time visitors take away from their experience at Crafted Outpost?

Crafted Outpost is a thoughtfully curated space where nature, art, and craftsmanship come together. From handcrafted walnut fixtures built from family-milled wood to floral chandeliers we change out seasonally and original artwork by local artists, the space reflects the same values as the work it holds.

Handmade reminds us that every piece has a human story behind it—someone imagined it, practiced their craft, and poured time, care, and heart into bringing it to life. Supporting handmade is about so much more than purchasing an object. It's investing in someone's dream, preserving craftsmanship, strengthening our local creative community, and choosing to live with things that carry meaning.
