Set within one of Wilmington’s most architecturally striking historic buildings, St. Thomas Preservation Hall is a venue where preservation and celebration exist in careful balance. With soaring ceilings, original structural details, and a design ethos rooted in honoring the past while embracing modern events, it has quickly become a sought-after setting for couples looking for something both atmospheric and deeply personal.

In this Q&A, we speak with General Manager Bryan Chappell about the vision behind St. Thomas Preservation Hall, the guest experience from arrival to last dance, and the thoughtful flexibility that allows each wedding to feel entirely its own. From candlelit ceremonies and immersive receptions to bold, design-forward celebrations, he shares how the space adapts to a wide range of aesthetics while never losing its sense of character. We also explore what makes weddings here memorable long after the night ends—and how recent renovations have further elevated the experience for couples and their guests.
St. Thomas Preservation Hall has such a distinctive atmosphere—how did the vision for the venue come together, and what feeling do you hope couples experience when they celebrate there?
St. Thomas Preservation Hall was designed as a place where history, architecture, and celebration come together. The intention from the start was to maintain the building's character and integrity and transform it into a venue for significant life events. Key features—soaring ceilings, natural light, and original architectural details—were carefully preserved, creating a lasting atmosphere. We want couples and their guests to experience awe upon entering, as well as warmth and connection. Celebrating in a place rich with history brings depth and significance. We hope every wedding feels not only beautiful, but grounded, intimate, and memorable in a way that endures long after the celebration.
What types of weddings or aesthetics does the space naturally lend itself to, and how flexible is the venue for couples looking to personalize their day?
St. Thomas Preservation Hall’s architecture accommodates a spectrum of styles, enabling couples to personalize their event with romantic, classic, modern, minimal, or bold design elements. Its neutral, historic setting provides an adaptable backdrop for lush florals, candlelit ceremonies, or contemporary installations. Flexibility is at the heart of what we offer, inviting couples to dream big and shape their perfect day. The open layout becomes a canvas for custom floor plans, ceremony arrangements, and reception designs, welcoming every personal detail. We encourage couples to realize their vision and collaborate closely with planners and creative partners, ensuring the venue genuinely reflects each couple’s unique style and story—and honors the building’s legacy.
