FROM VISION TO VOWS: Ivy Robinson on the Magic of Wedding Planning

For more than two decades, wedding planner Ivy Robinson has been transforming couples’ dreams into unforgettable celebrations. What began as a passion for storytelling and a desire to pursue a career in broadcast journalism unexpectedly led her into the world of events, where her natural eye for design, love of entertaining, and meticulous attention to detail quickly set her apart.

After gaining valuable experience working with an event-planning company and managing a wedding venue, Robinson launched her own business in 2002. Since then, she has become known for creating weddings that are as meaningful as they are beautiful, blending thoughtful design with flawless execution. With a hands-on approach, honest guidance, and a commitment to making every celebration uniquely personal, Robinson continues to help couples create wedding experiences that reflect their story and leave lasting memories for everyone involved.

Can you share the story behind your business—how it began and what inspired you to become a wedding planner?

I never really chose this industry—it chose me. I've always had an eye for design, a love of entertaining, and an obsession with details. I wanted to be the next Katie Couric and host The Today Show. After interning at CNN, I moved back to Raleigh, where a friend hired me to help her run an event-planning company. After that,  I managed a venue and learned all facets of the industry.  Clients were hiring me on the side to finish their wedding, and in 2002, my company was born.  And here we are, Twenty-plus years later, I still love the challenge of transforming a space and creating an experience that feels completely personal to my clients. There's nothing better than watching months of planning come to life.

How would you describe your planning style, and what sets your approach apart when working with couples?

My planning style is equal parts creative and practical. I love beautiful design, but I'm also obsessed with the guest experience and making sure everything actually works behind the scenes. I think what sets me apart is that I don't believe in one-size-fits-all weddings. Every couple has a different story, personality, and vision, and my job is to bring that to life in a way that feels authentic to them. I'm also incredibly hands-on throughout the process and treat every wedding as if it were my own.

What’s one thing couples can expect when working with you?

Honest guidance. I'll always tell couples what I think will have the biggest impact on their wedding and where their money is best spent. I'm not afraid to have the tough conversations if it means helping them make smarter decisions. At the end of the day, my goal is for them to enjoy the process and be present on their wedding day.

What are some of the most meaningful or memorable weddings you’ve planned, and what made them so special?

The weddings that stick with me are the ones where the couple trusted us completely and gave us creative license, and we created something that felt uniquely theirs.

My favorite memories are the couple's reactions as they see their reception tent for the first time. I love when guests don’t want to leave the dance floor because the energy is just that good. The best weddings tell a story. When every detail feels intentional, guests feel connected to the experience, and the couple is fully present rather than worrying about logistics—that's what makes a wedding memorable for me.

What advice would you give to newly engaged couples who are just beginning the planning process?

Start with the big picture before you get lost in the details and everything social media throws at you. Determine your budget, guest count, and priorities early on. Decide what matters most to you as a couple, whether that's the venue, food, entertainment, photography, or design, and allocate your resources accordingly. Also, remember that your wedding is about celebrating your relationship—not pleasing everyone else. The most memorable weddings are the ones that feel personal, intentional, and true to the couple hosting them.
