Tucked just minutes from the coast in Wilmington, Canterbury Stables is a wedding venue that feels worlds away—where coastal air meets the quiet romance of a historic horse farm. With its centuries-old live oak, sweeping pastoral landscape, and refined equestrian aesthetic, the property offers a setting that is both transportive and deeply rooted in legacy. Here, timeless charm and modern sophistication exist in perfect balance, creating an atmosphere of unhurried luxury that invites couples to slow down and truly savor each moment.

To learn more about the vision behind this distinctive venue, we spoke with venue manager Krystal Bennett. She shared how Canterbury Stables has evolved from a working farm with a rich history into a bespoke event destination—one where black-tie elegance feels right at home among grazing horses, coastal breezes, and the natural beauty of Bradley Creek.
Canterbury Stables offers a setting that feels both timeless and transportive—how did the vision for the venue evolve, and what atmosphere do you aim to create for couples on their wedding day?
Canterbury Stables was shaped by a desire to honor the property's legacy as a working horse farm while creating a setting that feels elevated, warm, and distinctly coastal. We wanted to preserve what makes the farm special—its history, its landscape, and its quiet rhythm—while thoughtfully designing a venue that feels refined without losing its soul.
The property is anchored by a remarkable live oak and set across 12 pastoral acres near Bradley Creek, so there is an immediate sense of escape when couples arrive. Although Canterbury feels tucked away and transportive, it is still just minutes from Wrightsville Beach. That contrast is part of what makes it memorable.
On a wedding day, we want couples and guests to feel both relaxed and taken care of. The atmosphere is elegant but unforced: beautiful, peaceful, and deeply personal. Whether the celebration is black tie or more understated, our goal is to create bespoke experiences that feel timeless, inviting, and unmistakably Canterbury.
The property has such a distinct character—how do couples typically use the space, and what opportunities are there to customize the experience to reflect their personal style?
One of the things couples love most about Canterbury is that the property gives them multiple ways to make the experience their own. Some are drawn to the live oak for the ceremony, while others prefer the Bradley Creek overlook and its softer, coastal backdrop. The cottages also give the day a more intimate, lived-in feel from the very beginning.
We often encourage couples to think beyond a single event and imagine the property as a full weekend setting. With our Thursday-to-Sunday package, the celebration can unfold over time, from a rehearsal dinner by the brick fireplace to a relaxed evening around the fire pit and a wedding day that uses the grounds in a way that feels natural to them.
The venue can flex in different directions depending on a couple's style. Some lean into the pastoral setting with tenting, soft florals, and long-table dinners, while others prefer a cleaner indoor-outdoor flow through the event center and covered patio. The goal is always the same: to give couples a beautiful foundation they can personalize in a way that feels true to them.
From ceremony to reception, how does the flow of a wedding day unfold at Canterbury Stables, and what moments tend to leave the strongest impression on guests?
A wedding day at Canterbury tends to unfold very naturally. Guests arrive and immediately feel that they have stepped into someplace unexpected—quiet, scenic, and removed from the pace of everyday life. From there, the transition from ceremony to cocktail hour to reception feels seamless because the property offers distinct spaces that still feel connected.
Ceremonies often take place beneath the live oak or near the Bradley Creek overlook, followed by cocktail hour on the covered patio as the light begins to shift across the paddocks. That in-between time is often what guests remember most. They begin to take in the setting more fully: the landscape, the horses, the light, and the contrast between the calm of the farm and the polish of the event itself.
By the time guests move into the reception, there is often a real sense of discovery. The venue can feel expansive and intimate at once, and that balance tends to leave a lasting impression. It is that blend of natural beauty, thoughtful design, and the working life of the farm that makes a wedding at Canterbury feel different.
What are some standout weddings or creative uses of the space that have stayed with you, and what made them particularly memorable?
The most memorable weddings are usually the ones that fully embrace the character of the property. We have seen Canterbury host everything from intimate garden-style celebrations with long farm tables to more tailored, contemporary events that bring a completely different energy to the same landscape.
What stays with us most, though, is when couples incorporate the living, working nature of the farm into the experience. Photos with the horses, quiet moments in the fields, and the way the setting changes with the light all add something a traditional venue cannot easily replicate. Those elements make the celebration feel grounded, personal, and specific to this place.
We have also loved seeing the property used in other thoughtful ways, from wellness gatherings to community events with local partners. It reinforces what Canterbury is at its core: not just a venue, but an environment people can experience in a way that feels meaningful and memorable.
For couples considering Canterbury Stables, what should they know about the planning process, vendor flexibility, and the overall experience of hosting their wedding with you?
For couples considering Canterbury, I think the most important thing to know is that the planning experience is meant to feel supportive, flexible, and highly personal. We have put real thought into the infrastructure of the venue, from the catering kitchen to the flow of the event spaces, so couples have a strong foundation from the start.
At the same time, we want them to have the freedom to bring in the vendors and creative details that reflect their style. We are not interested in making weddings feel formulaic. We want each celebration to feel like it belongs to the couple while still benefiting from a venue that is equipped to host it well.
Hosting a wedding here is also different because of the pace of the experience. With the full weekend package, couples have time to settle in, enjoy the property, and celebrate without feeling rushed. It becomes more than a venue rental—it feels like being welcomed into a place with history, character, and room to make the weekend your own.
