There are plenty of faceless chain coffee shops and tasteless brews around, but so many cafés, pop-ups, and bespoke coffee roasters along the Cape Fear Coast are so much more than that. These coffee afficiandos draw a community around them, offer charming character and care passionately about the java. So whether you're looking for beautiful latte art, ethically sourced beans, or fun, one-of-a-kind beverages paired with a sweet treat, here are our favorite spots to get your caffeine fix and listen to java tunes.

What Makes it Unique?

Coffee may be our business, but connection is the priority. For over a decade, we’ve been planning & dreaming & seeing coffee as a vessel to create a welcoming space—it’s the means, not the end. As a therapist, I (Juliana) believe deeply in connection and vulnerability. In everything we do, Walt and I aim to be human first—and invite our customers to do the same. Through our service, menus, events, and social media, we lead with authenticity. We want people to feel a true sense of belonging here, whether they’re having the best day or the hardest one—happy, grieving, anxious, or messy. Everyone is welcome. (We even have a kids’ menu.) Through that openness, we also connect people to support. Our mission—“Bridging the gap between brokenness and wholeness, one cup at a time”—guides us. We share local resources for therapy, housing, food, and crisis care, partner with Wellness Without Walls to help fund therapy, and donate monthly to their work. We also collaborate with nonprofits, schools, and agencies through pop-ups and fundraisers—because community care should be accessible, visible, and shared.

The Coffee

We source our beans from Social Coffee and Supply Co., a local Wilmington company known for its commitment to quality. Our signature espresso blend, The Daymaker, is made from beans imported from Brazil and Sumatra. These beans are roasted in small batches each week by Social Coffee and Supply Co. using a natural and semi-washed process. This careful selection and roasting give our coffee a semisweet chocolate flavor with hints of mulberries and chestnuts.

Our coffee, being delicious on its own, thanks to Social, has really allowed us to keep our specials familiar and classic. Rarely will you read one of our menus and not know what the words on the page mean. We’re simple and cosy people, and we want our drinks to feel the same. You’ll find us featuring familiar favourites like brown sugar cinnamon shaken espressos, tiramisu lattes, gingerbread chais, and apple crisp matchas.

The Flagship Brew

The Nanner Puddin’ Latte, has quickly become a fan favorite after our Spring menu launch on March 1st. It features creamy banana purée, two shots of espresso, your choice of milk, poured over ice, then topped with brown sugar cinnamon cold foam, crushed vanilla wafer cookies, and a dash of cinnamon.

The Sweet Treat

A slice of warm apple pie and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Homey, inviting, familiar and classic, but so good.

Q &A with Erik Maasch, Director of Marketing

What Makes it Unique?

We've been here for over 30 years. That's probably the simplest answer, but the community we've built and the passion we have for hospitality and excellence round it out. We started in Wilmington in 1995, and we're still roasting our own coffee, still showing up in our communities, and working to be better at every step. A lot of us on the corporate team started behind the bar as baristas (me included), and we're proud of that. It keeps us connected to what happens in the cafe every day and helps guide decisions, big and small. We genuinely love what we do and love where we do it. Each cafe has its own feel, its own regulars, and its own rhythm. We're big enough to be part of the fabric of this community but small enough that every location still feels like yours.

The Coffee

We source speciality-grade beans from growing regions around the world, Central and South America, Southeast Asia, and beyond, and everything gets roasted right here in Wilmington. We do artisan batches, up to five days a week, so there's a real intentionality to it. We also maintain a separate USDA-certified organic roastery, which means our organic lines are processed completely independently. Everything we roast has a 30-day freshness window that helps keep the coffee you get from us as fresh as possible.

The Flagship Brew

The Baklava Latte is the one people can’t stop talking about, and for good reason. We’re using honey to sweeten our signature espresso and real pistachio cream in the cold foam, with a little cinnamon and cardamom to tie it all together. It sounds indulgent, but it’s balanced perfectly and not too sweet. The Black Forest Cold Brew is right there alongside it - 24-hour steeped cold brew, Ghirardelli dark chocolate, and a cherry cold foam to tie it all together. And honestly, most of the credit for our seasonal menus goes to our cafe managers and baristas. They help create recipes, refine builds, and ensure what ends up in the cup is something worth being proud of. We couldn't get there without them.

The Sweet Treat

If you're going for an espresso or a latte, grab a chocolate chip walnut blondie. The walnut gives it enough weight that it actually holds up next to the coffee, rather than just being sweet. If you're having something lighter, like the Iced Lavender Fog, a lemon bar is the way to go. The brightness in both just makes sense together. And if you're a drip coffee person, the cinnamon streusel loaf. Warm spice, good crumb.

What Makes it Unique?

The Getaway is a woman-owned cafe and coffee spot nestled beside the Cape Fear River. We serve a southern menu with a modern twist, focusing on made-from-scratch items, including our buttermilk biscuits. We are hospitality-driven and community-oriented in a fast-casual atmosphere.

The Coffee

We serve the local company, Java Estate Roastery's Organic Fairtrade Blend, which consists of 75% organic Guatemalan (a medium roast) and 25% Organic Peru (a dark roast.) This balances to a smooth and rich blend.

The Flagship Brew

Currently, our spring favorite is our blueberry muffin latte. This iced latte is made with blueberry and vanilla syrup and a house-made blueberry jam, layered into an iced glass with milk of choice, espresso and a dash of cinnamon. This is a moderately sweet, flavorful latte that tastes exactly as it is named.

The Sweet Treat

A house made buttermilk biscuit of course!

What Makes it Unique?

Hidden Grounds' overall theme & backyard oasis are what keep people coming in. We have a very friendly crew who will always greet you at the door, and will jam with you as you enjoy your brew. While you get a mixture of '90s cowboy nostalgia & dinosaurs, we have space and beverages for all ages. Don't forget to check out our merch wall with all kinds of swag that you can take home to rep your new favorite shop. See for yourself at shophiddenthreads.com where our "Drip is Stronger than our Coffee."

The Coffee

We work with Perc Coffee out of Savannah, Georgia. For our espresso shots used in all speciality drinks and classics, we use a medium-dark Brazilian roast with notes of brown sugar and cocoa. That bean is called Juggernaut, and what makes this brew stand out is its ability to be enjoyed by itself or mixed into one of our shaken espressos. For our drip & cold brew, we use a smooth Brazil Legender bean that wakes you up with hints of almond butter & cocoa. This bean keeps our blue-collar regulars stopping by every morning to grab a hot or cold brew and get going.

The Flagship Brew

The Salty Dino is the #1 seller and most recommended to first-time guests. It's a shaken espresso latte, usually served iced, but it's great for our hot drinkers, too. This salted caramel latte, has a hint of vanilla and is always garnished with that yummy caramel drizzle. We have to also give a shoutout to our other main character, The Nanner Puddin'. We turned the southern delicacy dessert into an adventurous latte that can be enjoyed hot or iced.

The Sweet Treat

We work with an array of incredible pastry chefs, so it's hard to narrow down one, but the one that our staff sneaks away to eat the most is the Crookie by Caka Bakery. The cookie croissant comes large and is filled with half-baked chocolate chip cookie dough loaded throughout, which will cure any sweet tooth that walks in.

What Makes it Unique?

Every time you buy a cup or bag of coffee from Vigilant Hope Roasting, you make a difference in this city. As a Non-Profit coffee shop, our revenue gets reinvested in Vigilant Hope's long-term commitment to helping our community thrive. Your purchase powers mobile showers and pop-up safe spaces for our unhoused neighbors. It fuels youth leadership development in Wilmington's Southside. It creates employment opportunities for folks who are changing their generational narrative—overcoming poverty, addiction, and suffering. Our community cafe is a dynamic hub for sharing life together. When you visit, you may see neighbors from all walks of life, encounter featured neighborhood businesses, and find learning opportunities that will help you make a difference in your city. Come for the coffee, stay for the community.

The Coffee

From day 1 of roasting, we have been dedicated to producing high-quality craft coffee. We believe the coffee experience should be just as excellent as the mission it supports. As we enter our 7th year of roasting, our main focus is on single origin coffees from all over the world, but also offer a few blends. Each coffee has a story to tell and it's our job to help tell it by amplifying its voice and unique characteristics, which informs us how to roast each bean. Right now, some of the coffes we are featuring are from Kenya, Brazil, Indonesia, Guatemala, and (my favorite) Costa Rica.  We are experimenting with some new Single Origins and as we perfect our roasts, we can't wait to introduce them over the next few months.

The Flagship Brew

I'd say our flagship brew is either the classic, drip coffee or a flat white. Each week we rotate what coffee is available on drip and I think our customers enjoy finding out what we have ready for them. The care we put into roasting our beans and knowing our foundational barista skills is what makes our drinks stand out. From a black cup of coffee, to a flat white or a latte with one our homemade syrups, our customers can enjoy and taste the intentionality we invest in the basics of coffee.

The Sweet Treat

Definitely an "old skool" cinnamon roll from Cake Man Bakes or a slice of pecan coffee cake! One of our current featured bakers is Cake Man Bakes, owned and operated by our Southside neighbors Sophia and Thomas. Our customers can't get enough of their delicious baked goods and we love partnering with them. (Ps- Their new brick-and-mortar store is on the corner of 8th and Dawson Street and they take custom orders.)

What Makes it Unique?

We are a roaster / coffee shop in a shipping container with a focus on traditional style coffee.  We have a walk up window for those who want to sit on our patio and a drive up window for those on the run.  Our team creates a warm, enthusiastic welcome that makes you want to come back.  We have a seasonal syrup menu to keep you excited for our flavored lattes.

The Coffee

We get our coffee from 2 main coffee importers who focus on supporting farmers and making long term relationships possible.  We especially like to get limited varieties to offer on drip or as a retail bag for customers to take home for sipping.

The Flagship Brew

Our most popular roast we sell is our House blend.  We serve as espresso, and many of our guests take it home for personal brewing.  It is a 4 region blend that includes bright fruity notes with dark earthy and is balanced with caramel and baking spices.  Depending on the time of year and availability, the countries included include Ethiopia, Indonesia, Brazil and Guatemala.

The Sweet Treat

We proudly partner with Wilmington Bread Co. for our pastries — from the seasonal fruit Danish and savoury cheddar Gouda biscuits to the buttery almond croissant and classic scone, each one is a delicious highlight.

What Makes it Unique?

Our mission has always been simple: to serve and love people through coffee. Over time, that heart has created a real sense of family and belonging in both of our shops, and we truly love getting to be part of it. Whether you are a student who comes in every week, a parent juggling babies and toddlers, friends catching up, or someone just looking for a quiet moment with a good book, there is always a place for you at Social.

The Coffee

We have been roasting our own coffee for about 4 years now, and we source our coffee from producers all over the world. Our main espresso blend, Daymaker, is made up of coffees from Sumatra and Brazil. Our coffee offerings are based on what is seasonally available and we often have coffees in from Guatemala, Ethiopia, and Costa Rica. Our coffee is roasted in small batches throughout the week to ensure that we have the freshest coffee available for our customers.

The Flagship Brew

The Saltwater Cowboy for sure. It started as a seasonal drink, but it was such a fan favorite that we now have it year round! It is brown sugar coconut latte, topped with sweet cream cold foam and dash of salt.

The Sweet Treat

We’re lucky to work with several talented bakers, so our pastry case is always rotating. Whether it’s a flaky croissant or a seasonal slice of focaccia, we enjoy pairing our coffee with locally made pastries that make each visit feel special.

We prioritize quality over shortcuts and community over convenience. Every drink is crafted with care, every detail in our space is chosen with intention, and every guest is welcomed like a regular—whether it’s their first visit or their hundredth. Our menus are thoughtfully designed to stand apart, featuring a creative range of specialty and on-trend lattes.

The Coffee

We proudly source our coffee locally from Maven Coffee. Our current offering features a Colombian roast, selected for its vibrant flavor and smooth finish.

The Flagship Brew

Our most popular drink by far is our Cinny Roll. It is a brown sugar cinnamon latte that is topped with our signature cream cheese cold foam and dusted with cinnamon.

The Sweet Treat

We have lots of goodies from local bakeries. My personal go-to is either a CK bakes breakfast burrito or a Cravings peanut butter blondie. We also carry pastries from Burneys, Wilmington Bread Co, and Hanbaked.

What makes it unique?

Concorde Espresso Bar stands out as a “speed of sound” inspired spot paying homage to the legendary Concorde jet—blending high-speed aviation history with premium coffee and cocktails. We’re housed in a historic building (inside the Front Street Inn in downtown Wilmington), offering a seamless daytime caffeine experience that transitions into an evening cocktail bar with reservations after 4 PM. Highlights include our cozy indoor seating, spacious outdoor garden with fire pits and s’mores kits, handcrafted espresso martini flights, and a focus on travel-inspired, nostalgic vibes. It’s not just coffee—it’s an immersive experience combining artisanal brews, international flavors, and creative cocktails.

The Coffee

We use Mr. Espresso beans from Oakland, California. This family-owned roaster (established in 1978) specializes in traditional Italian-style roasting exclusively over oak wood fires—making them the only macro roaster in the U.S. to do so. They source well-seasoned oak wood from responsible Northern California suppliers and roast slowly to reduce acidity while enhancing body, sweetness, and smoothness. Our espresso features their signature blends (often medium to medium-dark roasts with rich notes like dark chocolate, hazelnut, caramel, toffee, and fudge), drawing from multiple origins blended for balance and depth—perfect for espresso-based drinks and cocktails.

Flagship Brew

Our current flagship brew is our house espresso using Mr. Espresso’s oak wood-roasted blend (such as their Neapolitan or similar signature espresso profiles). It’s a smooth, medium-dark roast with deep notes of dark chocolate, hazelnut, caramel, and toffee—delivering a rich, velvety body with low acidity and a lingering sweetness. We pull it with precision for thick crema and excellent balance: intense yet approachable, not bitter. During the day, it excels in straight shots, lattes, cappuccinos, or seasonal flavored drinks. In the evening, it becomes the foundation for our espresso martini flights and creative cocktails. Guests rave about its consistency, warmth, and how the wood-roasting imparts that signature roundness and depth.

The Sweet Treat

Hands down, our s’mores kit by the outdoor fire pit—it’s the ultimate pairing! The rich, chocolatey espresso complements the toasted marshmallow and graham cracker perfectly, especially with a cozy fire going. For daytime, a fresh pastry like a croissant or our indulgent affogato-style treats also elevates the experience.

Essential Coffee Tunes

We listen to Vance Joy radio in the morning for those laid-back, uplifting vibes that pair perfectly with our slow-roasted espresso pulls and busy opening service. At night, when we shift to cocktail mode, we switch to club lounge mixes for a sophisticated, chill-yet-energetic atmosphere that matches our evening martini flights and garden fire pits. Here are three standouts that always make the rotation:

“Riptide” by Vance Joy – upbeat, catchy, and instantly energizing for the morning rush.

“Mess Is Mine” by Vance Joy – mellow and introspective, great for those quieter moments with a latte.

“I’m With You” by Vance Joy – warm and feel-good, the perfect soundtrack for starting the day right. (For the night shift, our club lounge mixes bring in smooth deep house, chill electronic grooves, and ambient lounge tracks to keep the energy flowing without overwhelming the conversation.)

What Makes it Unique?

Based in Surf City, we are a mission minded coffee shop offering a space for our community to connect. Our coffee shop provides multiple settings for families, business meetings, students, and coffee dates. We have a large selection of flavored lattes, matchas, loose leaf teas, and frappes. All of our baked goods are baked fresh daily right here in house. Our customer favorites are the sea-salted chocolate chip cookies, blueberry muffins, seasonal fruit tarts, and our cake pops. We support a different non-profit each season including Share the Table, The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital, Safe Haven, Lauren’s Hope, Answering the Call and The Wingman Foundation and more! Come visit our friendly, beachy coffee shop.

The Coffee

We are obsessed with our coffee roasters. Our espresso, cold brew, and house roast all come fresh from Stone Street Roastery out of Brooklyn, New York. They provide us with the perfect medium/dark roast blends our customers love. We also brew an organic & rainforest alliance certified single origin roast from Bali. These special beans are roasted locally by Friends Coffee Roasters. Retail bags from both Stone Street and Friends are available for purchase at Sundial.

The Flagship Brew

The Sundial! This is our signature and most popular beverage with our regulars. It’s a slightly sweet iced caramel latte, topped with made to order coconut cold foam, a sprinkled with sea-salt and light caramel drizzle. It’s basically a taste of our Surf City sea air meets warm and cozy.

The Sweet Treat

My personal perfect pairing would be a black, hot americano with our sea-salted chocolate chip cookie. Fresh from the oven, these cookies are soft and chewy on the inside and crisp around the edges. They are topped with chunks of dark chocolate and sprinkled with flaky salt. This combo is heaven!

Essential Coffee Tunes

We are quite eclectic around here! But I feel like the three artist most played are Taylor Swift, Fleetwood Mac and Flip Turn. Definitely depends on the day and you never know who might be turning up the vibes.
