For more than 20 years, Terah Hoobler has been documenting weddings with an eye for authenticity and a passion for preserving life's most meaningful moments. Inspired by childhood memories of flipping through family photo albums with her grandmother, Terah learned early that photographs are more than beautiful images—they're a legacy that connects generations. Today, she blends heartfelt documentary storytelling with elegant editorial portraiture, creating wedding galleries that are as emotional as they are timeless. Affectionately calling her signature approach "DocuTorial," Terah captures every celebration with honesty, artistry, and an unwavering focus on the moments couples will treasure for a lifetime. In this Q&A, she shares the journey that led her to wedding photography, her philosophy behind the camera, and her advice for couples searching for the perfect photographer.

Can you share the story behind your photography business and what drew you to capturing weddings?
In 1999, I picked up my first camera—a film camera—and I was hooked almost instantly. I was a senior in high school, and the very first thing I did was convince a friend to let me photograph them. From that day on, you would have been hard-pressed to find me without a camera in my hand. But my love for photography actually started much earlier. As a child, I would sit with my grandmother and flip through old family albums. Those albums were some of her greatest treasures. She could tell me everyone's name, who they loved, what made them laugh, and the stories behind each photograph. Looking back, I realize she was teaching me something far more important than photography. She was teaching me about legacy. She showed me that photographs become priceless with time. They outlive us. They become the way future generations know where they came from and who loved them. In 2002, I photographed my first wedding, and I knew I had found what I was meant to do. I didn't just want to create beautiful images—I wanted to tell a story. I wanted a wedding gallery to feel like a family's first heirloom, full of real moments and genuine emotion. At the same time, I dreamed of becoming a National Geographic photographer. I was drawn to the honesty of photojournalism and the power of documenting life as it unfolds. So I combined that love of storytelling with my love for weddings, and it shaped the way I approach every celebration I photograph. More than twenty years later, that's still the heart of my work: real people, real moments, and love stories documented honestly so they can be remembered for generations to come.
How would you describe your photography style, and what sets your work apart?
My photography style is really a blend of the styles I love most. The truth is, I could never choose just one. Documentary photography is at the heart of how I photograph a wedding day. I'm always looking for the real moments, genuine emotion, and the little in-between interactions that tell your story naturally. At the same time, I absolutely love creating dramatic, intentionally lit portraits. My portrait work leans more editorial, giving you images that feel timeless and artistic without feeling overly posed. When you put those two approaches together, you get a wedding gallery that's full of authentic moments and striking portraits. Around here, I jokingly call it DocuTorial—the perfect mix of documentary storytelling and editorial portraiture.
What’s one thing couples can expect when working with you?
One thing you can expect when working with me is actually to enjoy being photographed. I know that sounds simple, but it's important. Most of my couples tell me they're awkward in front of the camera, and by the end of the day they're laughing, relaxed, and completely themselves. I'll guide you when you need it, step back when the moment deserves it, and create a space where you can be present. The result is a gallery that feels genuine because your experience was.
What are some of the most meaningful or memorable weddings you’ve captured, and what made them stand out?
The weddings that stay with me the longest are almost always the more intimate celebrations. There's something really special about a day that's centered on the couple and the people who matter most to them.
I especially love weddings where every detail feels personal. Whether it's handwritten vows, a family heirloom, a favorite book woven into the décor, or a reception that reflects their personalities instead of trends, those thoughtful touches tell a story that's uniquely theirs. To me, the most meaningful weddings aren't defined by the size of the guest list or the budget. They're the ones where every decision reflects who the couple truly is. Those are the weddings that photograph beautifully because they're authentic, and authenticity never goes out of style.

What advice would you give to couples when choosing the right wedding photographer?
My biggest piece of advice is to find a photographer you genuinely vibe with. You'll spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than almost anyone else—even your spouse in some cases! They'll be there for some of the most emotional, intimate, and unforgettable moments of your life, so you want someone who makes you feel comfortable and at ease. Beyond that, make sure you truly love their work. Don't just look at a handful of highlight images on Instagram. Take the time to look through their portfolio and make sure you love the way they tell a story, photograph people, and edit their images. Editing styles come and go, but your wedding photos are forever. Choose a photographer whose work still feels like you, not just what's trending.
