PLOT TWISTS & PAGE TURNERS: Inside Wilmington’s Only Thriller Bookstore
For thriller lovers, there’s nothing quite like the thrill of turning one more page, chasing clues, and trying to solve the mystery before the final reveal. In Wilmington, that passion has found a home at Oktober Books, the city’s only bookstore dedicated to the genre. Founded by owner Ashley Alderson, the concept grew from a personal love of thrillers and a book club with friends into a welcoming space where readers can gather, discover their next gripping read, and connect over a shared love of suspense.

Blending cozy, living-room-inspired interiors with subtle spooky touches and an atmosphere that feels like fall all year long, Oktober Books offers more than a place to shop for books. From author events and trivia nights to its own book club, the independent bookstore is building a community around stories that keep readers guessing. With a passion for both beloved thriller authors and emerging local and indie writers, Alderson is creating a destination for seasoned suspense enthusiasts and curious newcomers alike. And with the holiday season approaching, there’s no better time to discover a new favorite—or find the perfect page-turner for someone on your gift list.
What inspired you to open Wilmington’s only thriller bookstore, and how did the idea evolve from concept to reality?
The idea for Oktober Books began when my friends and I started a book club. They let me choose the books each month, and I always chose thrillers because that’s the genre I love to read. After a year of meeting with our private book club, I thought, why not create a space for other people who love thrillers, too?
What makes Oktober Books different from a traditional bookstore?
Oktober Books offers a space for gathering as well as reading. I wanted to create a seating area that felt like being at home, cozy in your own living room. I’ve tried to incorporate subtle nods to the spooky side of things while blending them with a design that always feels like fall.
Tell us a little about yourself and your love of reading. Do you have a favorite thriller author or book that sparked your passion for the genre, and how does your personal taste influence the books you stock?
I love reading because it’s a great way to relax and dive into a different world, especially with thrillers, where you naturally become the detective in each story. Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter was the first book my friends and I chose to read for our book club. It reignited a love for thrillers that began back in middle school when I first started reading R.L. Stine. I definitely include authors I’ve always loved in my book selection, but I also really enjoy discovering new indie and local authors.
What is it about thrillers that keeps readers coming back for more?
I believe people are drawn to thrillers because they’re thought-provoking and fun! I’m especially excited to see some of my favorite local authors gaining recognition for their work.
What has the response been like since opening Oktober Books?
The response from the readers who have found us has been great! We host a variety of events each month, from author events and trivia nights to our own book club.
Could you share a few must-reads for different types of thriller fans, from psychological suspense enthusiasts to readers who love a classic murder mystery?
I love a good holiday thriller! Here are a few must-reads:
A Killer for Christmas by Kim Harrington
XMAS Break by J.E. Rowney, which is written in an advent calendar style, with one chapter to read each day.
For anyone who wants to start reading thrillers, I recommend:
The Gift by Freida McFadden. It’s only 60 pages, making it a great introduction to the genre.
Non-holiday must-reads:
In a Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware
All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker
The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
