WHERE SPORT MEETS STYLE: Inside The Rec Club
Blending athletic performance with a fashion-forward sensibility, The Rec Club is redefining what it means to dress for an active lifestyle in Wilmington. Located at Lumina Station, this thoughtfully curated retail destination brings a fresh perspective to golf, tennis, and pickleball, pairing performance-driven apparel with contemporary style and a distinctly social spirit.

Owned by Kelly Amato, The Rec Club was born from the idea that sportswear should be as stylish as it is functional. Featuring brands such as Malbon, Devereux, and Rhone, the boutique celebrates the evolution of athletic wear beyond the course or court, with versatile pieces that transition effortlessly into everyday life. From vintage-inspired graphics and classic stripes to elevated essentials and distinctive accessories, every selection reflects a balance of timeless sports influences and modern individuality.
With its emphasis on personal style, emerging brands, and the community that brings people together through sport, The Rec Club offers more than a place to shop. It’s a destination for those who appreciate the intersection of fashion, recreation, and the coastal lifestyle that makes Wilmington unique. We caught up with Kelly to learn more about the inspiration behind the concept, her approach to curating the collection, and what shoppers can discover at The Rec Club.
What inspired the creation of The Rec Club, and what was the vision behind bringing this concept to Lumina Station?
The idea behind The Rec Club was to bring together two things that naturally go hand in hand: fashion and sport. We saw an opportunity to approach golf, tennis, and pickleball from a more fashion-forward perspective, where performance and lifestyle meet. Sportswear has evolved so much, and we wanted to create a destination for people who appreciate the style just as much as the sport itself.
The vision was to create something that feels elevated but approachable, with a mix of established brands, fresh finds, and pieces that work both on and off the court or course. Lumina Station felt like a natural fit for the concept. We wanted The Rec Club to feel like more than a traditional sporting goods store. It's a place where people can discover new brands, find their personal style, and connect with a community that shares an appreciation for fashion, sport, and an active lifestyle.
How do you see the relationship between athletic performance, personal style, and everyday living?
We see them as completely connected. What you wear to play a sport should feel just as considered as what you wear the rest of the day. Athletic wear has become such a big part of everyday style, and we love that the lines between performance and lifestyle continue to blur. You can have pieces that are functional and comfortable without sacrificing style.
That's really the idea behind The Rec Club: bringing a more fashion-driven perspective to sport. Whether you're heading to the golf course, playing a match, or meeting friends afterward, we want people to feel confident in what they're wearing. To us, it's about building a wardrobe that moves with your lifestyle and makes getting dressed for any part of your day feel effortless.
Athletic wear has become an essential part of modern wardrobes, moving seamlessly from the court or golf course to lunch with friends. How does The Rec Club embrace this evolution?
We love how athletic wear has become such a natural part of everyday dressing! It's no longer just about what you wear to play a sport; it's about pieces that fit into your lifestyle and still feel stylish long after the game is over. That shift is really at the heart of The Rec Club.
We're drawn to brands that combine performance and functionality with thoughtful design, great colors, and a strong sense of style. Brands such as Malbon, Devereux, and Rhone do an amazing job of creating pieces that go far beyond functionality.
Our aesthetic has a classic sports influence, but we like to give it a fresh, modern feel. Think classic options, elevated basics, unexpected color combinations, and pieces that can be styled just as easily for a day on the course as they can for lunch or running around town. We want our assortment to feel curated rather than purely athletic, with brands that bring their own personality to the mix. At the end of the day, Oliver is our sister store, so fashion will always influence our decisions.
What guides your approach to selecting the brands, apparel, and accessories you carry?
When selecting brands and products for The Rec Club, we look for a balance of quality, style, and individuality. We want to carry brands that understand the needs of the sport but also bring something interesting from a fashion perspective. Performance matters, of course, but so do the fit, the colors, the details, and the overall feel of a piece.
We're also thoughtful about creating an assortment that feels cohesive without being predictable. That means mixing established brands with newer or more unexpected finds and looking beyond apparel to the accessories that complete the experience. The little details can make all the difference.
Ultimately, we want every brand we bring in to have a reason for being there. We consider how it fits into the overall assortment, what it offers our customers, and whether it brings a fresh perspective to the world of sport and lifestyle. The goal is to offer a selection that feels considered, current, and exciting to shop, with something for different tastes and ways of living an active lifestyle.
What are some of the standout items or trends customers should look for this season?
This season, we're really drawn to vintage-inspired sportswear—the kind of pieces that feel like they could have come straight out of an old country club or tennis club but with a fresh, modern twist. Think graphics, classic stripes, timeless silhouettes, and unexpected details that give traditional sportswear a little more character.
We love that nostalgic feel, especially when it's styled in a way that feels current. There's a certain ease to vintage sportswear that we love. It feels classic, a little cool, and never like you're trying too hard. That's the energy we want customers to find at The Rec Club.
More than anything, we'd encourage customers to look for pieces they can wear beyond one specific activity. We love items that can transition from a morning on the golf course or tennis court into the rest of the day without requiring a complete outfit change. Layers and fun styling are key. That versatility, paired with a little individuality, is what makes sportswear exciting right now.
How does The Rec Club complement the broader Lumina Station experience?
Lumina Station has such a natural mix of shopping, dining, and community, so it felt like the right home for The Rec Club. Our sister store, Oliver, is also just down the way. There's an energy here that lends itself to our concept, with people coming to shop, meet friends, grab a bite, and enjoy the day.
With Wilmington's active lifestyle and love for the outdoors, we saw an opportunity to bring something different to the mix by connecting that lifestyle with a more fashion-driven approach to sport.
What we love about The Rec Club is that it can appeal to people in different ways. You might come in looking for something specific for golf or tennis, discover a new brand you've never heard of, or simply find inspiration in a different take on sportswear. We want the store to feel inviting, whether you're a serious player, someone who enjoys the social side of sport, or someone who simply loves the aesthetic.
More than anything, we hope new customers leave with a sense of what makes The Rec Club different. It's not just about what you wear to play; it's about the culture, the style, and the connections that happen around sport. We're excited to become part of the Lumina Station community and create a space people want to come back to, even when they don't have a particular item in mind.
