Mackenzie Ottinger of Sounds of Shutter, is a wedding and lifestyle photographer with a heartfelt, documentary approach to storytelling. Drawn to honest emotion and meaningful connection, she focuses on capturing moments as they naturally unfold—warm, real, and unposed. What began as a lifelong love for photography has grown into a practice rooted in presence, trust, and intentional storytelling, allowing couples to relive their wedding day exactly as it felt.

Can you share the story behind your photography business and what drew you to capturing weddings?
My story has always been a little complex. I’ve had a love for photography since I was 10, but I did not really take it seriously until I was in college. I studied Visual Arts at CFCC with a focus on photography. I completed my studies in 2020 but COVID made it difficult to pursue photography professionally at the time, so I put it on the back burner. (Note: We could honestly just cut out the family/marriage aspect) Then in 2022, I began to take it seriously again, photographing couples, families, friends, anything.
How would you describe your photography style, and what sets your work apart?
My style is timeless, warm, and candid. I focus on creating images that feel genuine, emotional, and real. What sets my work apart is that I take time to truly get to know my clients so that by the wedding day, there’s trust and comfort in front of the camera. My goal is to document moments as they naturally unfold, not to stage or force them.
What’s one thing couples can expect when working with you?
When working with me, couples can expect me to be both a storyteller and a calm, guiding presence. I’m honest, adaptable, and very go-with-the-flow. I anticipate moments before they happen and gently guide when needed, so nothing important is missed. Most importantly, I want couples to feel like they don’t need to perform for the camera—they can simply be present while I capture everything happening around them.
What are some of the most meaningful or memorable weddings you’ve captured, and what made them stand out?
Some of the most meaningful weddings I’ve captured are those in which couples truly prioritize being present with each other. I always encourage building in buffers and intentional quiet moments throughout the day so they can step away together. Those small pauses often become the most intimate and grounding parts of the entire wedding day, making the experience feel less rushed and more connected.
What advice would you give to couples when choosing the right wedding photographer?
One of the most important pieces of advice I can give is to choose a photographer who is transparent from the very beginning. You should clearly understand their pricing, process, expectations, boundaries, and communication style from your first interaction. Your photographer is one of the biggest investments you’ll make for your wedding day, so having full trust and clarity in that relationship is essential.
