Under the leadership of owner Drew Susi, Queen Street Tattoo has built a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship, talented artists and a culture that treats every client like family. From spontaneous walk-in flash tattoos to thoughtfully designed custom pieces, every tattoo is created with care, collaboration and a deep respect for the stories they represent. We caught up with Sarah to talk about building one of Wilmington's most beloved tattoo studios, the creative spirit of the Cargo District, and why making people feel comfortable is just as important as creating beautiful art.

Every tattoo tells a story. What inspired you to open Queen Street Tattoo, and what kind of experience did you want to create for clients from the moment they walk through the door?

The inspiration behind Queen Street Tattoo was to bring back the traditional tattoo shop experience while incorporating modern ideas to make the process more approachable for everyone. We wanted to offer the classic walk-in flash tattoo experience while also embracing today's conveniences, like online booking and having a dedicated front desk team to answer questions and help clients feel comfortable from the moment they arrive.

Our goal is for every customer to feel like family. We have so much fun at the shop, and we want people to know they can receive a professional, high-quality tattoo without feeling intimidated or overwhelmed. With set business hours six days a week, clients can stop by anytime to chat with our management team about their ideas, and there's almost always time for a walk-in.

Your artists each bring their own unique style and creative perspective. How do you balance individual artistic expression while maintaining the collaborative culture and reputation of Queen Street Tattoo?

We take great pride in the fact that all of our artists are professionally trained. While each artist has their own unique style, we're constantly sharing ideas, techniques, and ways to improve our art and processes. That collaborative environment keeps us humble, pushes us to grow, and ultimately helps us create the best possible outcome for every client.

The Cargo District has become one of Wilmington's most creative and independent neighborhoods. What has it meant to be part of this community, and how has the district influenced your business over the years?

We've been part of the Cargo District since its early days—about six years now. From the very beginning, when there were only a handful of businesses, everyone collaborated and supported one another, and that spirit has only continued to grow.

That sense of community is a huge part of what makes the Cargo District so special and why people love spending time here. I think the district has been so successful because everyone is passionate about what they do. We live it, breathe it, and genuinely enjoy our work—and I think that authenticity shows.

For many people, getting a tattoo marks an important milestone or memory. Are there any client stories or moments that have stayed with you and remind you why you love what you do?

Honestly, every client who has walked through our doors has left an impression on us. It's remarkable how many people have experienced incredible milestones or overcome personal hardships, and it's an honor to create something meaningful that they'll carry with them for the rest of their lives. We never take that responsibility lightly. It's a privilege to do what we do, and we take the time to consult with every client to ensure they receive the best possible artwork and an experience they'll always remember.

Looking ahead, what excites you most about the future of Queen Street Tattoo, and what do you hope first-time visitors discover when they choose your studio for their next piece of art?

We're incredibly excited about what's ahead. We have several new things in the works—cough, cough... piercings...—and as we continue to grow as artists, we're committed to producing the highest-quality work possible and staying at the top of our industry. For first-time visitors, we hope they leave thinking, "Wow, that was easy." We've spent years refining the process to make getting a tattoo as simple, welcoming, and enjoyable as possible while creating an open, fun space where everyone feels comfortable. Most of all, we hope every person who walks out our doors leaves feeling proud of their new tattoo—and like they've made a few new friends along the way.
